Distance from Stellar Parallax

Stellar parallax is the tiny apparent shift in a nearby star’s position against the distant background sky, measured from opposite points in Earth’s orbit six months apart. By definition, a star with a parallax angle of exactly 1 arcsecond lies at a distance of 1 parsec, giving the simple relationship distance (in parsecs) = 1 / parallax (in arcseconds).

One parsec equals about 3.26156 light-years, so the calculator also reports the distance in that more familiar unit. Parallax is the most direct, geometry-based method for measuring astronomical distances and forms the base rung of the cosmic distance ladder used to calibrate all other distance-measuring techniques.
