What Is Net Debt?

Net debt shows how much debt a company would still owe if it used all of its available cash to pay it down immediately. It’s a common measure of financial leverage used by analysts, lenders, and in valuation metrics like Enterprise Value.

The formula is: Net Debt = (Short-Term Debt + Long-Term Debt) – Cash & Cash Equivalents.

  • A positive net debt means the company’s debt exceeds its cash on hand — a leveraged position.
  • A negative net debt (sometimes called a "net cash" position) means the company holds more cash than debt.

Note: Some analysts also include short-term investments as part of "cash equivalents." This calculator is intended for general financial education and planning, not as formal investment advice.
