Enter your neck, waist, hip and height measurements to estimate body fat percentage using the US Navy circumference method.
The US Navy circumference method
The US Navy body fat method estimates body fat percentage using simple tape-measure circumferences instead of skinfold calipers or scans, making it a quick and widely used field method that the US Navy itself uses for fitness assessments.
The formula
For men: Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76. For women: Body Fat % = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387, with all measurements in inches.
- Measure waist at the navel, neck just below the larynx, and hips at the widest point
- Consistent, snug (not tight) tape placement matters for accuracy
This is a widely used estimation method for general fitness tracking and educational purposes, not a diagnostic body composition measurement. For more precise results, consider DEXA scanning or consult a qualified fitness or healthcare professional.
