What This Calculator Does
This calculator translates an internet connection speed given in megabits per second (Mbps) into a real-world download time for a file of a given size, and also converts the speed into megabytes per second (MB/s) and kilobytes per second (KB/s), the units file sizes and download progress bars are usually shown in.
The Formula
The key point of confusion this calculator resolves is that internet speeds are marketed in bits per second, while file sizes are measured in bytes, and there are 8 bits in a byte:
- Speed in MB/s = Speed in Mbps ÷ 8
- Download Time (seconds) = File Size (MB) ÷ Speed (MB/s)
Gigabyte file sizes are first converted to megabytes (1 GB = 1024 MB) before applying the formula, and the result is also shown in minutes for larger files.
Important Caveat
This is a theoretical estimate for general planning purposes only. Real-world download speed is almost always lower than the advertised connection speed due to network overhead, server-side limits, Wi-Fi conditions, and other traffic sharing the connection, so actual download times will typically be somewhat longer than the figure shown here.
