How This Distance Is Calculated

This calculator finds the great-circle distance between two points on Earth — the shortest path along the curved surface of the globe, as opposed to a straight line through the Earth’s interior. It uses the haversine formula, a standard method in navigation and geography.

The Formula

a = sin²(Δlat/2) + cos(lat1) × cos(lat2) × sin²(Δlon/2), then c = 2 × atan2(√a, √(1-a)), and finally Distance = R × c, where R is Earth’s average radius (6,371 km).

This calculation assumes a perfectly spherical Earth, so results can be off by up to about 0.5% compared to more precise ellipsoidal models — accurate enough for maps, travel planning, and general geography use.
