semitones

What this calculator does

Transposing a chord progression means shifting every chord up or down by the same number of semitones, moving the whole piece into a different key while keeping the same chord qualities and relationships.

How the calculation works

Each chord’s root note is located on the 12-note chromatic scale, shifted by the number of semitones you specify (wrapping around the scale as needed), and paired back up with its original chord quality (major, minor, 7th, and so on).

This is exactly how musicians transpose songs for a different vocal range or a capo position — the intervals between chords stay identical, only the starting pitch changes.
