The landscape rock calculator finds how many cubic yards and tons of decorative rock, gravel, or river rock you need to cover a given area at a chosen depth.
The formula
Volume in cubic feet equals length times width times depth (converted to feet), then divided by 27 to get cubic yards. Weight is estimated by multiplying cubic yards by a typical density factor (in tons per cubic yard) for the rock type you select, since different rock materials pack to different weights.
This tool gives a general planning estimate. Actual coverage can vary with rock size and how tightly it settles, so many suppliers suggest ordering 5-10% extra.
