What this calculator does
The rivet size calculator estimates a suitable rivet diameter, hole size, and grip length for joining sheet materials, using the common sheet-metal and aircraft-structures rule of thumb.
The formula
A widely used rule of thumb sets rivet diameter to about three times the thickness of the thickest sheet in the joint (D ≈ 3 × t), with a practical minimum diameter around 3/32 inch for very thin material. The drill hole is sized slightly larger than the rivet shank (typically a few thousandths of an inch of clearance) to allow easy insertion. Grip length — the rivet length needed to fully clamp the stack — is estimated as the total stacked material thickness plus about 1.5 times the rivet diameter, to leave enough shank to form a proper shop head or blind-rivet bulb.
