What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the minimum interior volume a junction box needs, following the box-fill method used in the National Electrical Code (NEC 314.16). Undersized boxes are a common code violation and safety concern since crowded wiring generates heat and is harder to work with safely.

The formula

Each current-carrying conductor entering the box counts as one volume allowance unit, based on its wire gauge. All ground wires together count as just one additional unit (using the largest ground gauge present), internal cable clamps together count as one unit, and each device (switch or receptacle) counts as two units at the gauge of the largest conductor connected to it. The total unit count is multiplied by the cubic-inch allowance per unit for that wire gauge to get the minimum required box volume.

  • Common allowances: 14 AWG = 2.00 in³, 12 AWG = 2.25 in³, 10 AWG = 2.50 in³, 8 AWG = 3.00 in³, 6 AWG = 5.00 in³.
  • Always choose a box with volume equal to or greater than this minimum, and confirm against your local electrical code before installation.
