What Is Hubble’s Law?
Hubble’s Law describes the observation that galaxies are receding from us at speeds proportional to their distance, which is key evidence for the expansion of the universe.
The Formula
v = H0 × d, so d = v / H0, where v is the galaxy’s recession velocity (found from its redshift), H0 is the Hubble constant, and d is the estimated distance. The Hubble constant’s value is still refined by ongoing research; a commonly cited value is around 70 km/s/Mpc.
For general educational purposes; valid mainly for relatively nearby galaxies where relativistic effects are small.
