What This Calculates

The Hall effect produces a small transverse voltage in a current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field. Measuring it reveals the Hall coefficient, which relates directly to the material’s charge carrier density and sign.

The Formula

Rh = (Vh × t) / (I × B), where Vh is the Hall voltage, t is the sample thickness, I is the current, and B is the magnetic field strength. Carrier density is then n = 1 / (Rh × e), where e is the elementary charge.
