What Faraday’s law of electrolysis calculates
Faraday’s laws of electrolysis relate the amount of a substance produced or consumed at an electrode to the amount of electric charge passed through the cell. This calculator combines both laws into a single mass estimate.
The formula
Mass = (I · t · M) / (z · F), where I is the current in amperes, t is the time in seconds, M is the molar mass of the substance, z is the number of electrons required per ion (its valence in the reaction), and F is Faraday’s constant (96,485 C/mol). The charge passed is Q = I · t, measured in coulombs.
Note: This assumes 100% current efficiency (no side reactions). Real electrolysis setups often have lower efficiency, which would reduce the actual yield below this theoretical value. For general education and lab-planning purposes.
