What this calculates
Electric charge is quantized — it always comes in whole-number multiples of the elementary charge carried by a single electron or proton. This calculator finds how many excess (or missing) electrons correspond to a given net charge.
The formula
Number of electrons N = |Q| / e, where Q is the total charge and e is the elementary charge, approximately 1.602176634 × 10-19 coulombs. A negative net charge corresponds to an excess of electrons, while a positive net charge corresponds to a deficit of electrons (relative to protons).
