What Darcy’s Law Calculates

Darcy’s Law describes how fluid flows through a porous medium such as soil, sand, or rock. It is the foundation of groundwater hydrology and is used to estimate how much water moves through an aquifer over time.

The Formula

The law states Q = K × (Δh / L) × A, where K is the hydraulic conductivity of the material, Δh/L is the hydraulic gradient (the drop in water level over the flow distance), and A is the cross-sectional area the flow passes through.

Note: this tool is for general planning and educational purposes; real aquifers are often heterogeneous and may require site-specific testing.
