The Formula
N = R* × fp × ne × fl × fi × fc × L, multiplying the rate of star formation by the fractions of stars with planets, habitable planets per star, and the fractions of those where life, intelligence, and detectable technology arise, times the average lifetime of such a civilization’s detectable signals.
