What DPMO Measures
Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO) is a standard Six Sigma quality metric that normalizes defect counts so processes with different complexity can be fairly compared. It scales your observed defect rate up to a ‘per one million chances to fail’ basis.
The Formula
DPMO = (Defects ÷ (Units × Opportunities per Unit)) × 1,000,000. ‘Opportunities per unit’ means the number of distinct ways a single unit could fail (for example, a circuit board with 8 solder joints has 8 opportunities per board).
- Lower DPMO means higher quality — world-class Six Sigma processes target roughly 3.4 DPMO.
- Estimated yield here is a simple (1 – defect rate) approximation, not the full Six Sigma rolled throughput yield model.
