What is the debt to asset ratio?
The debt to asset ratio shows what portion of total assets is financed by debt rather than equity or ownership capital. It’s a fundamental measure of financial leverage and risk.
The formula
Debt to Asset Ratio = Total Debt / Total Assets. A higher ratio means more leverage and greater reliance on borrowed money; a ratio above 1 (100%) means debt exceeds total assets, generally a warning sign.
