Sizing a grill for your crowd
Grill manufacturers commonly suggest about 72 square inches of primary cooking grate area per person being served at once (roughly enough space for a burger or a couple of skewers). This calculator multiplies that figure by the number of people you expect to be cooking for simultaneously, rather than your total guest count, since most gatherings don’t have everyone eating in the very first batch.
For reference, we also convert that area into an equivalent round grill diameter, since many grills are sold as circular kettles. Rectangular grills should compare their listed primary cooking area directly against the square-inch figure.
