How this calculator works

Your overall course grade is typically a weighted average of your current coursework grade and your final exam score. This calculator rearranges that weighted-average formula to solve for the one unknown: the score you need on your final exam.

The formula used is: Needed Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) / Final Weight, where Final Weight is expressed as a decimal (for example, 20% becomes 0.20).

  • If the result is above 100%, your target grade is not mathematically achievable on this final, even with a perfect score.
  • If the result is 0% or below, you have already secured your desired grade regardless of your final exam performance.

This tool is for general educational planning purposes; always confirm your exact grading weights with your instructor or syllabus.
