Why calcium matters

Calcium is the primary mineral that builds and maintains bones and teeth, and it also plays a role in muscle function, nerve signaling, and blood clotting. Needs are highest during childhood, adolescence, and older adulthood, when bone building or bone loss is most active.

How this calculator works

The calculator looks up the standard Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for calcium based on your age, sex, and life stage, using published dietary reference values. Teenagers need the most (1,300 mg/day) to support rapid bone growth, most adults need around 1,000 mg/day, and women over 50 and adults over 70 need slightly more (1,200 mg/day) as bone density naturally declines with age.

If you enter your typical daily calcium intake from food and supplements, the calculator compares it to your target so you can see whether your diet is meeting recommended levels.

This tool is for general educational and dietary planning purposes only and is not a substitute for a bone density test or medical advice. Speak with a healthcare professional about your individual calcium needs.
