What the push-up test measures

The push-up test is a simple, equipment-free way to assess upper body muscular strength and endurance. It counts the maximum number of continuous, properly-formed push-ups a person can perform.

How the rating works

This calculator compares your push-up count to commonly published age and sex-based fitness norm tables, sorting results into categories from Poor to Excellent. Norms differ between men and women, and expected counts decrease somewhat with age.

  • Excellent/Good: above typical fitness levels for your group.
  • Average/Above Average: in line with typical fitness levels.
  • Below Average/Poor: below typical fitness levels for your group.

Push-up form and testing conditions can affect results, and different published tables vary slightly. This tool is for general fitness and educational purposes only and is not a medical fitness assessment.
