How the Brick Calculator Works
This calculator divides the total wall area (length × height) by the exposed face area of a single brick, including its mortar joint, to estimate how many bricks are needed to cover the wall. The default brick size (8 in × 2.67 in face, a standard modular brick with a 3/8 in joint) can be adjusted to match the brick you’re using.
Mortar Estimate
Mortar volume is estimated using a common industry rule of thumb of roughly 0.03 cubic feet of mortar per square foot of wall for standard single-wythe brickwork, then converted into an approximate number of 80 lb mortar bags (each yielding about 1 cubic foot of mixed mortar).
Notes
- A waste allowance (10% by default) is added for cutting, breakage, and uneven coursing.
- Mortar joint thickness, wall thickness (single vs. double wythe), and brick type all affect real-world quantities — treat this as a planning estimate, not an exact material order.
- Always round up brick and mortar purchases to the next full unit or bag.
