Mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure
Mean arterial pressure (MAP) is the average pressure in your arteries during one heartbeat cycle, calculated as MAP = Diastolic + 1/3 × (Systolic − Diastolic). Pulse pressure is simply the difference between your systolic and diastolic readings, and reflects the force your heart generates with each beat.
Blood pressure categories
This calculator also classifies your reading using the widely referenced American Heart Association categories: Normal (below 120/80), Elevated (120-129 systolic and below 80 diastolic), Hypertension Stage 1 (130-139 or 80-89), Hypertension Stage 2 (140+ or 90+), and Hypertensive Crisis (above 180 and/or above 120, which needs urgent medical attention).
- MAP = Diastolic + (Systolic − Diastolic) / 3
- Pulse Pressure = Systolic − Diastolic
