What This Calculator Does

Chain lubricant is a small but recurring cost of bike ownership. This tool estimates your yearly spend by combining how far you ride, how often a chain needs relubing, and how many applications you actually get out of one bottle.

The math is straightforward: your annual mileage divided by the recommended relube interval gives the number of applications you need per year. That number divided by how many applications a bottle yields tells you how many bottles you will go through, and multiplying by the bottle price gives your annual cost. Dividing annual cost by annual mileage gives a cost-per-mile figure, which is scaled up to a cost-per-100-miles figure for easier comparison between lube brands.

  • Relube interval is commonly recommended around every 100 to 150 dry miles, or sooner after wet or muddy rides.
  • Applications per bottle varies by lube type and chain length; check the manufacturer’s guidance or your own usage history for the most accurate number.

This is a general planning estimate for budgeting bike maintenance costs, not a guarantee of any specific product’s performance or longevity.
