What Archimedes’ Principle says

Archimedes’ Principle states that the upward buoyant force on an object submerged (fully or partly) in a fluid equals the weight of the fluid it displaces: Fbuoyant = ρ × V × g, where ρ is the fluid’s density, V is the volume of fluid displaced, and g is the acceleration due to gravity.

How this calculator works

Enter the density of the fluid (water is about 1000 kg/m³) and the volume of fluid the object displaces. The calculator multiplies these by standard gravity to find the buoyant force in newtons, and also shows the equivalent mass of the displaced fluid.

An object floats when this buoyant force equals its own weight, and sinks when its weight exceeds the maximum possible buoyant force (when fully submerged). This calculator is for general physics education and planning purposes.
