What this calculator does
This calculator applies a widely used hobbyist rule of thumb for estimating how thick an aquarium’s glass panels should be, based on the water height and panel length, so the tank can safely hold its water load.
How the calculation works
It uses the common DIY approximation Thickness (in 32nds of an inch) = sqrt((Height² × Length) / K), where Height and Length are in inches and K is a safety-factor constant — a smaller K gives a thicker, more conservative result. The result is converted to millimeters and rounded up to the nearest commercially available glass thickness.
This formula is a long-standing hobbyist rule of thumb, not a substitute for a certified structural engineering calculation (professional tools typically use plate-bending analysis with aspect-ratio-specific coefficients). For large, unusually shaped, or high-value tanks, have the design reviewed by the glass manufacturer or a qualified professional before building.
