The Drake Equation
The Drake Equation, formulated in 1961 by astronomer Frank Drake, is a framework for estimating the number of communicating civilizations in our galaxy: N = R* × fp × ne × fl × fi × fc × L, multiplying the rate of star formation by successive fractions for planet formation, habitability, the emergence of life, intelligence, and communication technology, times how long such a civilization would remain detectable.
Every term after R* is highly uncertain, since we have only one confirmed example (Earth) to base estimates on — this is why published estimates of N range from far less than one to millions. The equation is best understood as a way to organize the key open questions in astrobiology, not as a precise predictive formula, and this calculator is offered purely for educational and speculative exploration.
