How the Gravel Calculator Works
This calculator multiplies the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume of gravel required, then converts that volume into cubic yards — the unit most gravel and stone yards sell by. Depth is entered in inches since gravel beds are typically shallow (2 to 6 inches for paths and drainage, more for driveways).
Converting Volume to Weight
Because gravel is usually priced and delivered by the ton, the calculator also estimates weight using an average density factor for the material type you choose. These density figures (roughly 1.2 to 1.6 tons per cubic yard) are typical industry averages; actual weight can vary with moisture content and how tightly the material is compacted.
Tips for Ordering
- A waste allowance is included by default to cover uneven ground and compaction settling.
- For driveways, a common practice is to lay gravel in 2-3 inch compacted layers rather than one thick layer.
- Always confirm exact density with your supplier for large or costly orders.
