How this calculator works
Like dogs, cats are far more sensitive to theobromine than humans are, and cats metabolize it slowly. This calculator multiplies the amount of chocolate eaten by the typical theobromine content for that chocolate type, then divides by your cat’s body weight to estimate a dose in milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg).
Commonly cited veterinary reference points place mild signs (vomiting, restlessness, increased thirst) starting around 20 mg/kg, with more serious cardiac effects around 40-50 mg/kg and seizure risk climbing above roughly 60 mg/kg. The calculator expresses your estimate as a percentage of the 20 mg/kg and 60 mg/kg reference points.
Note: cats generally lack the taste receptors that make sweets appealing, so accidental large chocolate ingestion is less common than in dogs, but the toxicity mechanism and relative risk per kilogram of body weight are similar.
