This calculator estimates how many calories your cat needs per day, based on its weight and its activity level or life stage.
The Formula
It first calculates Resting Energy Requirement (RER) = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75, the standard veterinary nutrition formula for calories burned at rest. This is then multiplied by an activity/life-stage factor to estimate the Daily Energy Requirement (DER), the total calories needed per day.
- Cats prone to weight gain generally need lower multipliers than active or growing cats.
- Compare the resulting calorie target to your food’s label to figure out a daily portion size.
