The carpet calculator estimates how much carpet you need to cover a room, plus the rough material cost, based on the room’s dimensions and the price you’ve been quoted.
The formula
Room area in square feet is length multiplied by width. Since carpet is almost always sold and priced by the square yard, a waste allowance is added first (typically 10% to cover seams, pattern matching, and awkward cuts around doors or closets), and the result is divided by 9 to convert square feet to square yards.
This is a general planning estimate. Odd-shaped rooms, roll widths, and seam placement can change the actual amount you need to buy, so it’s a good idea to confirm final quantities with your carpet retailer or installer.
