What This Calculator Does
This tool estimates the total amount of carbon dioxide a given number of trees can sequester (absorb and store) over a chosen number of years, based on the trees’ growth stage, and converts that into an equivalent amount of car-driving emissions offset.
How the Estimate Works
Trees absorb CO2 through photosynthesis at rates that change as they grow. This calculator uses commonly cited average sequestration rates: about 6 kg of CO2 per year for a young tree or seedling (consistent with figures used in EPA greenhouse gas equivalency guidance), around 22 kg per year for a tree in medium growth, and around 36 kg per year for a mature tree, figures broadly in line with estimates from the U.S. Forest Service and Arbor Day Foundation. The calculator multiplies tree count, the per-tree annual rate, and the number of years to get total CO2 sequestered.
Why It Matters
Tree planting and forest preservation are widely used natural approaches to offsetting carbon emissions. Understanding roughly how much CO2 a set of trees can absorb over time helps put reforestation or landscaping efforts into a meaningful climate context.
