What This Calculator Does

This calculator finds the total border length needed to edge a rectangular garden bed, patio, driveway, or paved area, then converts that into the number of edging blocks or bricks required.

The Formula

Border length is simply the perimeter of the rectangle: 2 x (length + width). Dividing the perimeter by the length of a single block or brick gives the raw piece count, and a waste allowance (typically 5-15%) is added to cover cuts, breakage, and corner adjustments.

Good to Know

  • For irregular shapes, break the border into straight segments and add their lengths together before dividing by block size.
  • This is a planning estimate for general project use — always round up and confirm quantities with your supplier before ordering.
