How often do people blink?

The average adult blinks somewhere around 15 to 20 times per minute while awake, though the rate can rise with dry eyes, fatigue, or emotional stress, and drop significantly during tasks that demand intense visual focus, such as reading or screen use.

How this calculator works

The calculator multiplies your blink rate by 60 minutes and by the number of hours you are awake each day to estimate total daily blinks, then multiplies by 365.25 for a yearly estimate. It also estimates the total time your eyes are physically closed while blinking, using the fact that a single blink typically lasts about 0.3 to 0.4 seconds.

Blink rate exists mainly to spread tears evenly across the eye’s surface, clear debris, and protect the cornea, so meaningful reductions in blink rate (common during screen use) can contribute to dry, irritated eyes.

This calculator is for general educational and curiosity purposes using population-average figures. If you experience persistent eye dryness, irritation, or unusually frequent blinking, consult an eye care professional.
