What this calculator does

Acid-base balance in the blood is governed by the relationship between bicarbonate (a base) and carbon dioxide (an acid, via PaCO2). This calculator applies the classic Henderson-Hasselbalch equation to estimate blood pH from those two values.

The formula used

pH = 6.1 + log10(HCO3- ÷ (0.03 × PaCO2)), where HCO3- is in mEq/L and PaCO2 is in mmHg. A normal blood pH generally falls between about 7.35 and 7.45; values outside that range suggest acidosis or alkalosis.
