What is accumulated depreciation?

Accumulated depreciation is the total amount of an asset’s cost that has been allocated as an expense over its useful life so far. It reduces the asset’s book value on the balance sheet.

How this calculator works

This calculator uses the straight-line depreciation method: it subtracts the salvage value from the original cost to find the depreciable base, divides that by the useful life to get annual depreciation, then multiplies by the number of years already in use (capped at the useful life) to find accumulated depreciation.

This is a general accounting estimate. Other depreciation methods (declining balance, units of production) may be required for specific tax or reporting purposes.
