How windsocks indicate wind speed

A windsock hangs straight down in calm air and lifts toward horizontal as wind speed increases. Standard aviation windsocks are designed so that a full horizontal extension (a 90-degree angle from vertical) indicates a wind speed of roughly 15 knots or more.

How this calculator works

Enter the angle the windsock makes measured from hanging straight down (0 degrees is calm, 90 degrees is fully horizontal). The calculator applies the standard aviation rule-of-thumb that treats this angle as roughly proportional to wind speed up to the 15-knot design point, then converts the result into mph and km/h.

This is a rough visual-estimate reference tool for general and aviation-training use, not a substitute for a calibrated anemometer or official airport wind reports.
