Converting watts to amps
Watts measure power, while amps measure current. The relationship between them depends on voltage and, for AC circuits, on power factor, so a simple watts-to-amps conversion needs the circuit type as well as the wattage.
How this calculator works
For a DC circuit, current is simply I = P / V. For single-phase AC, the calculator uses I = P / (V × PF), where PF is the power factor of the load (1.0 for purely resistive loads like heaters, lower for inductive loads like motors). For three-phase AC, it uses I = P / (√3 × V × PF), which accounts for the phase relationship between the three conductors.
