💧 Water Footprint Calculator
Estimate your personal water footprint, combining the water embedded in your diet with your direct household water use.
What a water footprint is
A water footprint includes not just the water that comes out of your tap, but also the “virtual water” embedded in the food you eat and products you use, based on how much water was required to produce them. Diet is typically the largest component of a personal water footprint, since growing animal feed and raising livestock require far more water than growing plant foods directly.
How this calculator works
This tool combines a diet-based water footprint (using published average figures for water embedded in different diet types, ranging from roughly 2,000 liters per day for a vegan diet to roughly 5,000 liters per day for a meat-heavy diet) with your direct household water use (drinking, bathing, laundry, and other home uses), then scales the daily total up to an annual figure in cubic meters.
These are general average estimates based on published water footprint research; actual figures vary by specific foods, production methods, and region. This tool is for general educational awareness, not a precise water audit.
