Von Mises Equivalent Stress

The von Mises stress condenses a complex, multi-axis stress state into a single equivalent value that can be compared directly against a material’s uniaxial yield strength. For a 2D plane-stress state, it’s calculated as σvm = √(σx2 − σxσy + σy2 + 3τxy2).

According to the von Mises (distortion-energy) yield criterion, a ductile material begins to yield when this equivalent stress reaches the material’s yield strength, regardless of the actual combination of normal and shear stress producing it. This is one of the most widely used failure criteria in mechanical and structural design for ductile metals.
