The Cooper 12-minute run test

Developed by Dr. Kenneth Cooper in 1968, this field test estimates aerobic fitness (VO2 max) from how far you can run in exactly 12 minutes. The formula used here, VO2max = (distance in meters – 504.9) / 44.73, converts your distance directly into an estimated maximum oxygen uptake in milliliters per kilogram of body weight per minute.

Interpreting your score

VO2 max is a standard measure of cardiovascular fitness used by runners, cyclists, and endurance athletes to track training progress. The category ranges shown are approximate and adapted from widely published normative fitness tables, and they differ slightly by sex due to average physiological differences.

  • Results depend heavily on pacing, motivation, terrain, and weather during the test.
  • This estimate is for general fitness tracking and educational purposes, not a laboratory-grade measurement or medical assessment.
