What Is Total Asset Turnover?

Total asset turnover ratio measures how efficiently a company uses all of its assets to generate sales revenue. A higher ratio generally indicates more efficient use of assets to produce revenue.

The Formula

Total Asset Turnover = Net Sales ÷ Average Total Assets, where average total assets is typically (Beginning Total Assets + Ending Total Assets) ÷ 2 for the period.

  • Asset-heavy industries (like utilities or manufacturing) naturally have lower turnover ratios than asset-light industries (like retail or services).
  • Compare this ratio to industry benchmarks and over multiple periods rather than in isolation.
