Thrust-to-Weight Ratio

Thrust-to-weight ratio (TWR) compares a vehicle’s engine thrust to its own weight: TWR = Thrust ÷ (mass × g), where g is gravitational acceleration. It’s a dimensionless number that determines whether a rocket can lift off (TWR must exceed 1) and how quickly an aircraft or rocket can accelerate.

Orbital rockets typically launch with a TWR just over 1 at liftoff, rising as propellant burns off and mass decreases, while fighter jets with afterburners can exceed a TWR of 1, letting them accelerate straight up. A TWR of exactly 1 means thrust just balances weight, resulting in no net acceleration (hovering, for a rocket).
