What This Calculator Does
Thermal energy is the heat energy transferred to or from a substance as its temperature changes. This calculator estimates how much energy is needed to heat or cool an object or fluid by a given amount.
The Formula
The calculator uses the standard heat energy equation Q = m × c × ΔT, where m is mass, c is specific heat capacity, and ΔT is the temperature change. The result is shown in kilojoules (kJ) and also converted to kilocalories (kcal) for convenience, since kcal is common in nutrition and some engineering contexts.
This formula applies only within a single phase of matter; it does not include the extra latent heat needed for melting, freezing, boiling, or condensation. Provided for general educational and planning purposes.
