What this calculator does
This tool converts a flat area measured in square feet, plus a fill depth, into cubic yards — the unit most material suppliers (concrete, gravel, mulch, soil, sand) sell and deliver by.
The formula
Cubic feet = area × (depth in inches ÷ 12). Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. An optional waste percentage adds a buffer for spillage, compaction, and uneven ground.
Always round up to the nearest whole or half yard when ordering from a supplier, since most yards deliver in fixed truckload increments.
