What this calculator does
The Square Yard Calculator converts a length and width, measured in feet, into a total area in square yards — the unit most flooring, carpet, sod, and fabric is priced and sold by.
The formula
The area in square feet is found first with Area (sq ft) = length × width, then converted to square yards by dividing by 9, since one square yard equals 3 feet × 3 feet: Area (sq yd) = Area (sq ft) / 9.
For an irregularly shaped room, break it into rectangular sections, calculate each section’s area separately, and add the results together before converting to square yards.
- When ordering material, add a small waste allowance (often 5-10%) to cover cuts, pattern matching, and trimming.
- Always double-check supplier-specific roll widths and minimum order quantities before purchasing.
