What is sleep debt?
Sleep debt is the cumulative difference between how much sleep your body needs and how much you actually get. Small nightly shortfalls add up quickly over days and weeks, contributing to fatigue and reduced alertness.
How it’s calculated
This calculator subtracts your actual average nightly sleep from your recommended amount to get a nightly deficit, then multiplies that by the number of nights you’ve tracked to estimate your total accumulated sleep debt. It also estimates how many extra full nights of recommended sleep it would take to fully repay that debt.
Sleep needs vary by individual and age, with most adults needing about 7-9 hours per night. This tool offers a general estimate for educational and self-tracking purposes and is not a substitute for advice from a sleep specialist or physician.
