What a shower actually costs
Showers use two resources that both cost money: the water itself, and the energy used to heat it. This calculator estimates both based on your showerhead’s flow rate, shower length, incoming water temperature rise, and local utility rates.
How this calculator works
Water volume is flow rate multiplied by shower length. Water cost comes from your local rate per 1,000 gallons. Heating energy uses the standard formula for heating water, BTU = gallons x 8.34 x temperature rise in degrees Fahrenheit, converted to kilowatt-hours (1 kWh = 3,412 BTU) and multiplied by your electricity rate. The two costs are added together and scaled to a weekly and annual total.
This is an estimate for general budgeting; actual costs vary with your water heater’s efficiency and fuel type (gas water heaters use a different cost basis than electric), local rates, and incoming water temperature.
