Getting the water ratio right

Different rice varieties absorb different amounts of water, so a single ratio doesn’t work for every type. This calculator uses commonly recommended stovetop ratios: 1:2 for white long-grain rice, 1:2.25 for brown rice, 1:1.5 for basmati, 1:1.75 for jasmine, 1:3 for wild rice, and roughly 1:1.2 for sushi rice.

We also show an approximate cooked yield, since most rice roughly triples in volume once cooked. Cooking method (stovetop, rice cooker, or absorption method), altitude, and pot size can all shift the ideal ratio slightly, so treat this as a strong starting point rather than an absolute rule.
