What is reaction order?
The order of a reaction with respect to a reactant describes how strongly the reaction rate depends on that reactant’s concentration. An order of 0 means rate is independent of concentration, order 1 means rate is directly proportional, and order 2 means rate depends on the square of concentration.
How this calculator works
Using two experimental trials with different concentrations and measured rates, the reaction order is found from the method of initial rates: n = ln(rate2/rate1) / ln(conc2/conc1). This comes from taking the ratio of the rate law rate = k[conc]^n at two different concentrations and solving for the exponent n.
Note: This method assumes all other reactant concentrations were held constant between the two trials. Real experimental order values often round to a nearby whole or half number; the calculator also shows the nearest common order for reference. Provided for general chemistry education purposes.
